A Writing Contest!

Philippine Genre Stories will give a free copy of the next issue (and P100.00, enough for a good cup of coffee) to the person who writes the best genre story (speculative, horror, crime, mystery, detective, sci-fi, etc.) about the above picture. The story will be printed in a future issue. Please send your entries to pdoimage@yahoo.com, and please label your email "Siluet Entry". Include your name and your pertinent contact information. Deadline is February 11, 2007.

To help you, ask yourselves a few questions: Who's the kid in the foreground, and is the kid a boy or a girl? Who's the man further away? Is he walking away from or walking to the kid? Do they know each other? If yes, what's their relationship? If not, what does this encounter mean? And where the heck are they? Is that a school? A hospital? An army barracks? A mental institution? Is the kid scared? Or is it the man who's afraid?

The above image is called "Siluet", and was taken by Dmitry, who hails from Chernogolovka, Russia. It was lifted from morguefile.com, a public image archive. Siluet is intriguing, and the background blur only enhances that feeling. Dmitry has said that he is very glad that we are using his photo, so please drop him a line and let him know what you think of it (his email address: dzz@mail.ru). PGS has abided by all the Terms of Use for this image as stipulated at morguefile.com. PGS is not responsible for any attacks of inspiration from this photo that will lead to lost time spent writing a longer story that lasts for pages and pages. Well, maybe a little.

Hey!

This is great! Rules are still the same, right?

I think I'll be able to work something out. Great pic, BTW.

PS.
I wasn't able to make the deadline last time, but I'll try to move my gears up for this one.

Wah! 11?! Guess I have to step it up then. We can end up to two, right? I think I'll only be able to work up to one, but I'll try.

Thanks for the opportunity :)

Hi anonymous and anonymous :)

Sure, keep it short. 500 words or less would be fine. Thanks!

Ayah!

I didn't check!

500 words! Damn. Mine's too long. Guess I'll have to revise or send the other one I've long since made.

As long as it's inspired or contains a scene from the picture, right?

Thanks for the opportunity! 6 days more to go!

Hi pgenrestories!

I managed to get my first story down to below 500, but my second goes up to 640+. Is that still acceptable?

Thanks! I'll be sending it in by the 9th.

Hi gwendy.

Well, send in what you have and let's see how your story(ies) compares with those of other writers. If it goes over 500 words, then space constraint might become a consideration, and it'll all depend on how the layout turns out. Thanks!

I was wondering if you put the cover letter in the e-mail or in the document itself along with the story? (.rtf tight?) How much of the story and yourself should you describe?

Hi dancer. I assume you're talking about a short-story submission for the Digest and not for the "Siluet" image.

Keep your cover letter short and to the point. A page will do. If we do find your story suitable, we'll ask you for more details. Thanks.

I was actually wondering about siluet. So I assume the cover letter should be in the same file as the story, right? or should it be separate rtf files? or simply in the body of the e-mail while the story is an attached rtf file?

I am a little confused. Do we send the entries right away or do we only send the cover letter, something like a query letter?

Hi again, Dancer. If you're sending to siluet, there's no need for a cover letter, just your name and your pertinent contact information.

The limit is 500 words, and don't need to send it as an attachment; you can send it in the body of the email to pdoimage@yahoo.com. Thanks again.

i wish you didnt enumerate those questions... it kinda preempted possible scenarios.

Point taken, anonymous. The next issue won't have guide questions. But having these questions shouldn't harm the 500-word story that one can come up with. It won't be taken against the submission if these guide questions helped in the writing of the story.

Congratulations on your first issue! I have just read it and i can say that it rocks. I've been waiting for a pinoy magazine like this for the longest time! Hope you'd include a lot more variety in your future stories, I'd be very interested in crime/mystery and superheroics! Great job!

Thanks, foxmodem! Glad you enjoyed it. If you've got the time, join the writing contest, and maybe even, send in one of your stories for possible publication.

Next issue will have more variety, including scifi, experimental, mythic Filipino (a humorous one), and even fantasy-romance. Sadly, no true-blue mystery/suspense or superheroic submissions yet; it's curious, really, especially the lack of mystery/suspense stories.

Hi.

Do you inform people if they're submissions have been received and (later) rejected? When will the results be announced?

Blogger pgenrestories said...

Hi, curious. The name of the winner, and his/her entry, will be printed in the 2nd issue, which is due out between late Feb. to mid-March. We won't announce or print it on the blog at once as that might spoil the surprise and pleasure for the winner; there's a wonderful feeling in seeing one's work on print, on actual paper, in a publication for all to see and read. We will email the winner once issue 2 is out in the market. We'll consider putting up the winning entry for Siluet and the author's name on the blog probably after some time has passed after issue 2 comes out. Thanks!
