Poetry As Punishment?

From Bad To Verse: Vandals Get Classroom Penance

Poetic Justice: some young people broke into Robert Frost's former home, had a party, and subsequently trashed the place. As part of their punishment, they're required to take classes in his poetry.

"This is where Frost is relevant. This is the irony of this whole thing. You come to a path in the woods where you can say, `Shall I go to this party and get drunk out of my mind?'" Professor Jay Parini, 60, said. "Everything in life is choices."

Even the setting had parallels, he said: "Believe me, if you're a teenager, you're always in the damned woods. Literally, you're in the woods — probably too much you're in the woods. And metaphorically you're in the woods, in your life. Look at you here, in court diversion! If that isn't `in the woods,' what the hell is `in the woods'? You're in the woods!"

The Professor is, of course, referencing Robert Frost's poem, "The Road Not Taken".

I can imagine how this could be punishment for some. Maybe they'll learn something from it. Punishment for me would be either a dental appointment or a course in Air Supply music. Or worse, a combination of both, like an appointment with a dentist who likes to pipe in Air Supply music.

but... but i like air supply.

also, i'm kind of glad they were required to take classes in his poetry (makes me feel like justice for yet another wronged poet was served, for some reason), though i'm not happy that they might be conditioned to think of it as "punishment." in the end the exposure might do nothing.

though i'm optimistic. even if they end up laughing at the whole experience when they're older, they might walk away with lessons learned.

You like Air Supply?

...

Ayoko na kitang kausapin.

(joke lang)

Like you, I do hope that the vandals will learn something from Frost's poems. They're already suffering some form of social backlash.

Uy, alam ko, gumawa ka at magturo ka ng course on Air Supply lyrics. Study the symbolism of their words.

But I won't be there, sorry... :D

Sige. I've lost a lot of energy for metal and hard rock now that I'm old, but I think I can sit through a couple of your Disturbed classes. :)

Hehe. "Disturbed classes".
